Preparing for your Photoshoot

A comprehensive guide on styling, timing, and what to expect during your mountain photoshoot
 

01. The Mountain Light & Timing

Light is everything in mountain photography. I scout every location prior to our shoot, studying how the sun hits the peaks at different times of day and across shifting weather conditions.​

We typically aim for early morning golden hour or late evening dusk. This creates soft, flattering light and dramatic silhouettes across the Sea to Sky valleys. If mountain mist or clouds roll in, don't worry—overcast skies produce moody, atmospheric, and deeply romantic tones that look extraordinary on camera.

02. ​Wardrobe and styling advisory

What you wear plays a large role in how your photos feel. The goal is to feel comfortable and authentic while choosing clothing that complements the rugged natural environment.

Earthy Color Palette

Choose warm neutrals, muted taupes, sage, rust, terracotta, olive, cream, and charcoal. Avoid fluorescent neon shades, heavy graphic logos, or intense matching patterns.

Texture & Movement

Fabrics with physical texture—chunky knits, linen, corduroy, wool, and flowing dresses that catch the alpine breeze—add incredible visual depth and life to your images.

Trail-Ready Footwear

We often explore rocky paths, alpine trails, and grassy knolls. Bring supportive boots or sneakers for walking between spots; you can always slip into dress shoes for the portraits.

03. What to Expect on Shoot Day

Forget stiff, awkward posing. My approach is prompt-based and relaxed. I’ll guide you with easy, natural interactions—walking together, whispering a joke, sharing a quiet moment—so you're focused on each other rather than staring into the lens.

 

If kids are joining us, let them be playful and curious! Some of the most cherished family portraits happen between formal shots—when laughter is candid and genuine.

04. Shoot Day Packing Checklist

  • Extra warm layers, jackets, or an aesthetic blanket to stay cozy between takes.

  • Comfortable trail footwear for walking between photo spots.

  • Touch-up essentials: lip balm, hairbrush or comb for windy mountain ridges, and compact mirror.

  • Water, snacks (especially for little ones), and a towel if we shoot near glacial lakes or creeks.
